Rumors that the car from Mitsubishi with the legendary name Eclipse will again be in mass production have been circulating for several months. Opinion about what the new Eclipse will look like has fallen on the various concepts that Mitsubishi has unveiled from time to time. But the prefix Cross changed all expectations, it was this word that indicated that something was wrong here.
After the demonstration of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross concept, which smoothly passed into the production model of the future, it became clear that it doesn't smell like a sports car, and the Cross prefix is a direct allusion to the body form factor of the new crossover. Still, despite the expectations of a sports car, the new crossover Eclipse Cross received an attractive interior and exterior design.
According to representatives of Mitsubishi, the first official display of the new crossover Eclipse Cross will take place in the coming days at the Geneva Motor Show. Then there will be a complete list of complete sets for different countries and the approximate cost of the new item.
The appearance of the new Eclipse
Outwardly, the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross does not resemble the previously known Eclipse sports car. The exterior of the Eclipse Cross combines the features of the Mitsubishi Outlander, Lancer Sportback and a bit of Eclipse. The front part of the crossover is in many ways similar to the last generation Outlander 2016. The radiator grille can be divided into three parts, the upper part consists of a small grille into two stripes, the central part was traditionally given under the Mitsubishi emblem. At the same level as the grille, the designers placed LED optics with integrated daytime running lights.
Slightly lower, in the center, they placed another lattice in the form of a trapezoid, black. Due to its shape, the second grille blows the engine well and increases the aerodynamics of the crossover. The sides of the new Eclipse Cross are decorated with large fog lights, also made on the basis of LEDs. The characteristic fangs near the foglights are taken one to one from the new Outlander 2017 crossover. The same arrangement under the front optics, along the contour of the grille and underneath the foglights.
In the lower part of the bumper of the Eclipse Cross, the third grille is clearly visible, as many designers say, resembles the teeth of a crossover, accentuated from above by a gray plastic insert and from below by engine protection, they resemble lips. All this innovation of the crossover underlines the hood from above, repeating the lines of the radiator grille and optics. As with the radiator grille, the crossover's bonnet is reminiscent of the latest generation Outlander in many ways.
Having examined the crossover in front, let's move on to the side of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, here the body shapes begin to gradually resemble the previously known Lancer Sportback, only the body height has become larger. From the middle of the front door to the rear optics, the designers made a curved line, another similar line was placed at the bottom of the doors, just above the moldings on the doors. When viewed from the side, they both resemble the letter Z.
A distinctive feature of the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross crossover are side rear-view mirrors, often Mitsubishi engineers place them in the corner of the front door glass. Here they decided to deviate from the rules and placed the doors on the body. As for a crossover, the dimensions of the mirrors allow for a good view of the situation, which cannot be said for the Eclipse sports car. According to Mitsubishi, the upper part of the mirror will be painted in body color with repeaters, while the lower part and the base of the fasteners will be black.
The rear part goes on the slope, and not exactly as is often in crossovers and SUVs, the engineers made such a step to improve aerodynamics and give a more sporty style to the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross crossover. The upper part of the roof is decorated with a spoiler to improve the very same aerodynamics. The rear optics, one might say, are located along and across the trunk lid.
Part of the feet of the Eclipse Cross crossover is located from the spoiler and along the trunk lid to the bumper. The elongated LED optics are clearly visible in bad weather and over long distances. Another additional part of the optics was placed across the trunk lid of the crossover. It repeats the functions of the stops, and divides the glass of the lid into upper and lower parts. Something similar was previously implemented on the Honda Civic Hatchback. These shapes really speak of the sporty direction of the Eclipse Cross.
As for the roof of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross crossover, there will be two options: solid in the basic configuration and panoramic for all other trim levels, including the maximum trim level. The back of the roof is decorated with a shark fin antenna.
The parameters of the new crossover Eclipse Cross are not large enough, as expected:
- length is - 4405 mm;
- crossover width - 1805 mm;
- height - 1685 mm;
- the wheelbase is 2670 mm.
As for the body color of the Eclipse Cross, the manufacturer does not indicate, but according to reliable data, these will be the same shades as in the Outlander:
- Red;
- White;
- black;
- silver;
- dark gray metallic;
- Brown;
- dark blue metallic.
In all likelihood, a few more bright shades can fall into this list of the Eclipse Cross crossover, as for a sports car type. It will be possible to find out for sure only after the show in Geneva. The main competitor of the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross was the Nissan Qashqai, despite the fact that Nissan bought Mitsubishi, and the platforms of the companies migrate from one company to another from time to time. In general, the exterior of the Eclipse Cross crossover turned out to be quite good, it will appeal to fans of crossovers and sedans, as it combines the features of both types of cars.
Eclipse crossover interior
Despite the similarity of the exterior of the Mitsubishi Outlander crossover and the Eclipse Cross crossover, the interior of the new Eclipse was made unique, except that very separate features remind of the Outlander crossover. The central part of the front panel is occupied by two openings for air supply and an emergency parking button. The touch screen of the multimedia system was decided to be taken out as a separate link and placed in the upper part of the panel.
According to Mitsubishi representatives, the innovation of the Eclipse Cross engineers can be considered the simultaneous presence of two different operating systems on board multimedia. This is the presence of the operating system CarPlay and Android Auto, previously, due to technology, only one system could be placed. Now, by connecting the smartphone, the Eclipse on-board computer detects its operating system and selects the on-board system in the same way.
Under the air ducts there is a control panel for the Eclipse Cross crossover functions, even below the control panel for the audio system and dual-zone climate control. On a pleasant note, there are different types of charging, from USB, 12V and 220V. Since the Eclipse Cross crossover is new, it was not without modern technology, an example of this is wireless charging for gadgets. Having installed such a gadget for charging, the driver will see the corresponding backlight signal near the charging, it will also show the charging duration.
According to some experts, the middle part of the front panel of the Eclipse Cross crossover resembles in many ways a part of the panel taken from the new Audi A series.
Moving on to the location of the gear lever, the features of the recently presented new generation Lexus LS 2018 are clearly visible. Most of all, this is reminiscent of the touch panel near the automatic transmission lever, with which you can control the multimedia system and do not reach for the touch screen.
Here are located next to the buttons for controlling the heated front seats, a differential lock (S-AWC system - Super All-Wheel Control) and an electromechanical handbrake. The front seats of the Eclipse Cross are sporty, similar to those found in the Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback.A spacious armrest was placed between the seats; according to some reports, it will contain USB and 12V charging.
The rear row of seats of the Eclipse Cross can accommodate three passengers, since the number of head restraints is exactly that amount. Exactly the same rear seats, but with different head restraints, are located in the new Mitsubishi Outlander.
Like any driver, it is interesting to consider the driver's seat. The first thing you notice about the Eclipse Cross is the head-up display behind the dash. As it should be for Mitsubishi and not only, it will display information about the condition of the car, navigation maps and travel speed. The dashboard of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross itself is in many ways reminiscent of the dashboard from the new Outlander, as well as the steering wheel. The central part is occupied by a color display for displaying information about the state of the crossover, direction according to navigation maps, fuel level and so on.
The steering wheel is covered in leather, and the lower part and in the Outlander with a plastic insert. On the side spokes, the designers tried to place as many functional buttons as possible to control the audio, multimedia system and other functions of the Eclipse Cross. Behind the wheel are gearshift paddles, the same ones found in the new Outlander GT. To the left of the steering wheel, in the knee area, a row of buttons for controlling security systems, setting optics and other Eclipse Cross systems.
There is no information for certain what colors will be in the new Eclipse Cross, as well as materials, but judging from the officially presented photos, on the Mitsubishi website it will be leather and a combination of leather and fabric. In color, it will be black and white. Rumor has it the possibility of the appearance of brown and cream.
As a conclusion about the interior of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, we can say that rather it is a collection of different parts from different cars, in almost every part you can recognize one or another very famous car model. I would like to see something new and unique, which has not yet been in the previous Mitsubishi crossovers.
Specifications
Regarding the technical characteristics of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross crossover, the manufacturer brought the initial data. The buyer will be offered two engines to choose from, the first is a turbocharged gasoline engine with a volume of 1.5 liters. and a turbo diesel with a volume of 2.2 liters. There are no more detailed characteristics, but presumably the power of the first engine is about 160 hp, and the diesel unit will give out about 200 hp.
The first engine of the crossover will be paired with a variator eight-speed gearbox, with the function of simulating manual shifting in sport mode. An automatic transmission is installed for the second Eclipse Cross engine. Both variants will be equipped with a dual clutch. Regardless of the configuration of the Eclipse Cross crossover, four-wheel drive with electronic control of the connection will be installed at the base. To aid the electronics, a new state-of-the-art S-AWC system will be installed.

Crossover safety systems
As with technical specifications, there is very little information on security systems. It is reliably known that the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be equipped with the maximum number of airbags. Passenger and driver airbags will be installed in front of the crossover, and an additional airbag for the driver will be installed in the knee area. Side airbags in the seats will be installed for the front and rear rows of seats.

Since the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross crossover is still considered a concept, it is too early to talk about any trim levels or price. Based on the induced parameters, at least two complete sets of the crossover will enter the market in relation to the technical characteristics, but the presence of four complete sets is assumed for stuffing with electronics.
The market price of the new Eclipse Cross will likely be in the region of the Outlander crossover. The start is supposed to start at 1,200,000 rubles and end at 2,300,000 rubles.
Well, as a conclusion about the crossover can be done like this. The first glance at the name confuses the buyer, but seeing a crossover, not a sports car, there are hopes that the novelty is still of a sporty nature. The exterior and interior of the Eclipse Cross is comfortable enough, but lacks the unique twist found in every Mitsubishi vehicle. It remains to wait for the official appearance of the Eclipse Cross at the Geneva Motor Show, then it will be possible to adequately evaluate the new product in all respects.
